Explicit Instruction

Explicit instruction is a high-impact strategy that aligns with how students learn. It is a process where information is taught clearly, systematically and explicitly.

Explicit instruction is a strategy rooted in cognitive science, particularly the Cognitive Overload theory. If a teacher floods students with too much new information, or if the task is too ambiguous, students experience cognitive overload. When this happens, learning stops, and information fails to transfer into long-term memory.

Explicit teaching works because it manages this load. By breaking complex concepts into smaller parts and providing heavy guidance initially, teachers ensure students’ working memories aren't overwhelmed, allowing them to actually process and retain the new skills.

At Brisbane Tuition, our teaching is grounded in the belief that clarity is kindness. We know that students flourish when the guesswork is removed from learning. By showing students exactly what to do and how to do it, we lower their anxiety and raise their confidence.
