As my experience highlights, I have worked both in classrooms and leadership. As Head of Curriculum (P-2), I led the charge in transforming early years literacy instruction in my school.

I needed a new adventure but couldn’t leave behind my absolute love for teaching and passion for building strong foundations... so here I am!

I am a passionate advocate for teachers. I work hard to reinforce the incredible work they do in the classroom every day. I’ve built a supportive and engaging environment for our learners to thrive.

What We Offer

School Readiness Sessions

If you feel your child could benefit from extra preparation for big school, we’ve got you!
Run by an experienced Prep teacher, our sessions are a beautiful balance of school routines, explicit teaching and play. Our activities are designed to build communication and social skills, independence and self-care, resilience and persistence, foundational literacy and numeracy, and fine-motor skills.
We weave a strong oral language focus through every task, turning practical activities into language-learning opportunities.

Prep & Year 1 Literacy Sessions

We offer literacy sessions targeting Prep and Year 1 reading and writing skills. Our sessions cover basic sound-letter knowledge (Prep), advanced sound-letter knowledge (Year 1), phonological awareness skills, handwriting and spelling.

AERO’s analysis of Australian Early Development Census data identifies specific ‘building block’ skills that predict success in Year 3 NAPLAN. For a Prep student, these skills include writing their own name in English, attaching sounds to letters, using one-to-one correspondence and awareness of directionality.

Year 2 Reading Sessions

We offer reading sessions, targeting Year 2 reading skills. These skills include phonemic awareness, the advanced phonics code, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. We also practise NAPLAN questions, as that gets closer.
Did you know?
Unlike speaking, reading isn’t a natural skill (Dehaene, 2009). We have to physically teach our brain to connect the visual part (seeing letters) with the language part (hearing sounds). This is why explicit instruction is so powerful!

Year 2 Writing Sessions

We offer writing sessions, targeting Year 2 writing skills. Our writing sessions teach a wide range of skills, including handwriting fluency, spelling, literary devices, audience and purpose, text structure, punctuation and grammar. We practise NAPLAN writing tasks, as that gets closer.

When we write by hand, the fine motor movements require much more brain engagement than when we type. This creates widespread brain connectivity, specifically in the areas responsible for memory formation and learning (Van der Weel & Van der Meer, 2024).

Literacy for Home Educated Students

We offer longer sessions during the day for home educated students. In these sessions, we target both reading and writing skills. We run a Prep session and a Year 1-2 session.
Feedback and progress insights can be provided that align with the Australian Curriculum.
We have a lovely cafe next door where our families can enjoy a coffee during the tuition session.
English Language Lessons

Our English language learning sessions are designed for students who are learning English, or who require vocabulary and syntax (sentence structure) practice.
We know that EALD (English as an Additional Language/Dialect) support is critical and some schools don’t have the capacity to provide as much support as they would like. Our sessions are here to fill this gap, ensuring your child has the structured support they need to unlock the language of the classroom.

Recent research by AERO shows that students starting school with beginning levels of English typically need at least 6 years to participate in curriculum learning at the same level as their peers.

We are qualified teachers.

We were founded by a head of curriculum, teacher and literacy coach who has taught in schools up until very recently. We have our finger on the pulse when it comes to educational research, we know what your child should be learning and we know how to manage behaviour. Tick, tick, tick!

We work with your kids.

While iPad activities may sometimes compliment what we are teaching, screens are a minimal part of our sessions. We love to teach and that's what we actually do.

We are the sweet spot between personalisation and collaboration.

Your child gets the best of both worlds. Our small-group model provides personalised attention that is hard to achieve in a classroom of up to 30 students. At the same time, our group work offers the collaborative energy of a group, creating a supportive and effective learning environment.

We make our decisions based on data.

At the end of the day, data is the cornerstone of our work. We capture learning data continuously alongside our instruction. It takes all of the guesswork out of teaching and ensures that our work is always purposeful. It’s how we can be certain your child is consolidating and building skills when they are with us.

We have a behaviour policy.

We have high expectations of our students. Our classroom is a respectful place at all times, which results in our students feeling safe and able to learn. Our behaviour policy applies to students, staff and parents. It’s a non-negotiable that anyone involved with Brisbane Tuition demonstrates respect and consideration towards others.

Our Signature Practices

Explicit Instruction

Why? Because students process limited amounts of new information.
Explicit instruction is when we clearly explain and effectively demonstrate what students need to learn. It is a structured and systematic approach to teaching skills.
Teachers provide students with clear statements about what they are going to learn, clear explanations and demonstrations of the skill, and supported practice and feedback until mastery is achieved.
Explicit teaching manages cognitive load and is one of the most effective ways to build new, complex skills and knowledge.
Learning By Doing

Why? Because it bridges the gap between abstract and real, reduces mental load and creates neural pathways.
Our sessions involve hands-on activities like Fly Swat Splat (to learn high-frequency words) and our Feed The Monster game (to learn initial sounds). Connecting physical actions to abstract ideas keeps kids engaged and helps to make learning stick.
Learning by doing is essential for students who need to physically interact with a concept to understand it.
Spaced Retrieval

Why? So children develop and demonstrate mastery of their learning.
Spaced retrieval is the active practice of recalling previous learning at a point in time after the initial lesson.
Instead of teaching a concept once and moving on, we ask students to actively recall previous learning after a break.
This regular, spaced-out rhythm gives the brain time to ‘forget’ and then work harder to recall information, which is the process that builds deep, long-term understanding.
Active Participation

Why? Because eliciting evidence of learning frequently during the lesson prevents gaps from forming and guarantees targeted teaching.
Active participation strategies, like choral responses and written responses on mini-whiteboards, ensures every child answers every question, not just the ones who put up their hand.
Active participation ensures we catch misconceptions the moment they happen, enabling us to provide immediate feedback, rather than waiting for a test result weeks later. In a small-group tuition setting, this is our superpower!
Data-based decision making

Why? Because data-based decision making means we’re not just guessing!
We use specific information from short assessments and observations to find the gaps in a student's learning, and then we re-check their understanding to ensure the new skill has been acquired before we move on.
Fostering a Growth Mindset

Why? Because in a culture too often driven by comparison, a growth mindset protects your child's confidence and keeps them focused on their own journey.
We teach our students that their brain is like a muscle - it gets stronger the more you use it!
Research has shown that students are more motivated when they know that their intelligence is not fixed and can be improved through effort. How cool is that!

So… What’s The Process?

If you think we are the right fit for you, make contact with us by filling out the expression of interest form.
We will contact you, via your preferred method, to find out some more info about your child.
If required, we will book your child in for some initial 1:1 literacy assessments.
We will select the appropriate group for your child and book them in.
Please keep in mind that this group may change, depending on how quickly they progress or observations we make in the first few weeks of their tuition sessions.
Your child will start their sessions with Brisbane Tuition!
If you wish, you may ask your child’s teacher (or any other specialists involved in their learning) to make contact with us.
They might have particular learning goals we can help to support.

At Brisbane Tuition, we don’t sit on computers and click our way through programs.

We offer group tuition sessions with a qualified teacher. We structure our lessons using evidence-based teaching strategies designed for maximum impact and offer short sharp activities to keep your child motivated and reward all of their hard work.

We know the boring bits are important (like holding our pencil properly and sitting at our desk to write), so we have tools to help us get through. We use very cool bouncy bands, because they are a simple, quiet, and highly effective tool for self-regulation, especially for students who need to move to think.

Multiplication Handball, Ball Toss Q&A, Whiteboard Relay - they’re all part of the fun at Brisbane Tuition. Because if kids have to keep doing school work after school, we’re going to make it fun.

We Know How Kids Learn.

We are planning on expanding our sessions as time goes on, so we welcome suggestions about other areas of school tuition that may be useful.
We offer small group sessions. This model is fantastic for building confidence, as students realise they aren't the only ones who find things tricky. It provides the perfect blend of individual attention from the teacher and the collaborative energy of learning with peers.
Foundational skills are the essential building blocks of learning. Just like a house, you can't build the second story if the first-floor foundation is wobbly.
Here’s an example:
Kids don’t learn to read naturally, the way they learn to speak. There are some key foundational skills involved in learning to read. These skills include:
- Phonics: knowing the sounds that letters make
- Decoding: being able to blend sounds together to read a word
- Fluency: Reading smoothly and with expression, not like a robot
- Vocabulary: Knowing what the words on the page actually mean
- Comprehension: the ability to understand the message in the text
See how there’s so many critical foundational skills underlying reading? If one of these building blocks is missing, your child’s reading may be impacted. We need to get these foundational skills right.
Absolutely! Data is a cornerstone of our work! Data is what we use to make our decisions and to plan for future lessons.
We will provide you with regular feedback to share what we worked on, celebrate your child’s 'a-ha!' moments, and to give you an idea of what we will be targeting next.
- Our founder is a registered teacher and former head of curriculum.
- We actually teach our students. They don’t spend the whole session on iPads or computers.
- We use our curriculum knowledge and current research to ensure our sessions target exactly what our students need.
- We make the sessions engaging and we allow the kids to move. We know that the word “tutoring“ can cue eye rolls from kids, but we make it as fun as possible.

Yes we do. Our behaviour policy applies to students, staff and parents. It’s a non-negotiable that anyone involved with Brisbane Tuition demonstrates respect and consideration towards others.
We understand that life happens! To support our small-group scheduling, we require 24 hours notice if you need to cancel. You will then need to rebook, if there is a spot available.
Please note that sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be billed at the usual rate.
We keep billing simple and predictable. Invoices are sent out when you sign up and must be paid prior to the beginning of term to secure your child's spot.
No. Consistency and regularity is key to building skills and confidence. We enrol by the term to ensure your child gets that consistent support and can build real momentum.
Absolutely. You will just pay for the remaining weeks of the term.
